Christmas Tree Cake | Alternative Wedding Cake Inspiration

We’re well and truly in the Christmas spirit, the decorations are up, mulled wine is being drunk and so thought it was about time we did some Christmas baking. Whether this is something to impress your guests at Christmas or you’re looking for some alternative winter wedding inspiration, this edible DIY is sure to put a smile on your face (and anyone else who gets a piece!)

Introducing the Christmas tree cake! It can be decorated in so many ways to fit your theme and Christmas style, and could even double up as a fun wedding cake alternative idea if you’re having a Christmas wedding!
Move over tiered cakes, we’ve got a Christmas tree cake to cut.

The wonderful thing about this cake idea is that pretty much any type and flavour of cake would work! Use your favourite cake recipe and wow your friends and family with this festive treat.

For the video we’ve kept it simple with a vanilla sponge recipe and used the following quantities to fill two 29cmx20cm baking tins.

  • 16oz caster sugar
  • 16oz butter or margarine
  • 8 eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 16oz self raising flour

Mix the sugar and butter together until fully mixed, add the eggs and mix again until fully incorporated. Add the vanilla extract then fold in the flour using a spoon or spatula. Divide the mix equally into two baking tins which have been lined with baking paper.

Bake at 160oC for approximately 25-30 minutes

Draw a Christmas tree shape on a piece of paper/baking paper to act as your template. This can be any shape tree you fancy, or print a shape from clipart/Google images if you’re not confident to draw freehand.

Once the cakes are cool, cut around the template to create your tree shaped cakes.

Sandwich the cakes together with buttercream/frosting and decorate! This is where the fun really begins, whatever your Christmas style, go to town with those colours, embellishments and maybe even some (it’s Christmas so maybe a lot) of edible glitter!

We kept it classic and used white, red and green buttercream with different piping nozzles to create our Christmas tree. And then finished the decoration with gingerbread biscuits in various shapes and Christmas sprinkles from Baking Time Club.

We’d love to see your seasonal creations so don’t forget to tag us over on Instagram if you give this a go!

How to Make Christmas Crackers

Make your very own Christmas Cracker Favours!

***

Let’s be real, a Christmas table without pigs in blankets or Christmas crackers is basically just a regular Sunday roast!  Now we’ll leave you to sort the pigs in blankets (please do, it’s a must!), but we’re here to help you with the rest (aka the crackers).

If you’re getting married at this magical time of year, providing crackers on your reception tables is the ultimate festive touch.  Make them your favours, maybe even personalising the contents to each guest / group of guests, print off some jokes, pop in a party hat and you’ve got yourself a favour, festive table decor AND an ice breaker in one.  Heck, add the person’s name to it and you’ve also got a name card…4-in-1, doesn’t get better than that!

Tip: Either attach a simple gift tag to the ribbon at one end of the cracker when you’re tying it, or keep an eye out for our follow up tutorial on how to add your chosen personalisation using Cricut!  We’ll include the link here, and in the YouTube video description box as soon as it’s available. Now available here: https://youtu.be/-J6031HOSWw!

We’ve created a free cracker template for you to download and use (personal use only please) to make life super simple!  In fact, we’ve gone a step further and made two!  If you’re here armed only with a pair of scissors or craft knife, then our less complex template over on our ‘Wedding Downloads’ page is probably the one for you…go ahead, download, cut one out & use as a stencil for the rest, then pick up our video tutorial at the assembly stage (time stamps in video description box).  However, if you’re super nifty with a craft knife or have a Cricut, give this jazzier template a whirl:

Christmas Cracker Favour w:decal, 11″x6.3″

Our tutorial will talk you through every stage of how to create your perfect wintery Christmas Crackers using Cricut / Cricut Design Space, and how to assemble them to get you all the hostess-with-the-mostest points at your Christmas gathering!

Let us know how you get on!  We’re very excited to see these on your tables, whether it be your winter wedding or Christmas Day family gathering, tag us in your photos over on Instagram!

Wishing you a wonderful festive season,

— Rebecca & Laura at Bride Society.

Winter Wedding Cover Up Ideas

Additions to your bridal outfit to keep the chill off or to simply add a splash of sparkle

***

So you’re planning a winter wedding. You’re embracing the shorter days and chill that comes with the winter months, and going all out with the cosy candlelight potential, darker colour schemes and rich, sumptuous decor. A nip in the air (or even snow!) may mean you’re thinking about extra layers for your wedding outfit, to keep the style but lose the chill! Whether it’s for warmth, or simply to add some extra sparkle, this is where wedding cover ups come in.

From the sheerest of detachable sleeves to full on faux fur, and everything in between, there’s sure to be something that’s perfect to fit the style of your Big Day. Plus, you’re not committed to wearing a cover up all day, so just like that you’ve got two outfits for the price of one. Winner!

We last filmed a video like this back in 2017, (no we don’t know where the time’s gone either!) so we thought it was about time we had a look at what’s currently available. We’ve looked at jackets, capes, boleros, sleeves, toppers and more! Although the majority of our picks are from the High Street, don’t forget to check out Bridal retailers to see what options they may have as well.

You can see everything we’ve picked out on our Pinterest Board.

Wedding Photographer Alternatives

What to do when a Photographer is out of budget (or if you want extra photography ideas)!

***

The economy is tough right now.  No two ways about it and things aren’t set to get any rosier in the foreseeable.  You’ve done your wedding budget and got some quotes from suppliers, maybe you accidentally splattered your cuppa (/wine) all over your computer screen when those email quotes came in!  We’re not even suggesting the prices are unjustifiable, it’s just a lot, and so is everything else, we get it.

So, that’s the downer.  But this lovingly planned and long anticipated day only happens once and you’ll want to be able to hold on to the memories forever.  Even if you can’t get the fancy, all-singing-all-dancing photographer, all is not lost.  We’re here to pick you back up with a whole heap of alternative ideas from possible work arounds to still get an official photographer, to lots of low cost ways to get all the photo memories you could desire, plus tips to make sure no special moment is missed.

2023 Wedding Trend Predictions

***

Usually, at the end of the summer, as the days start getting colder, the nights start drawing in and we get that ‘back to school’ feeling, we know it’s time to sit down and look ahead to the new year. Not to wish away time, the year flies by fast enough as it is! But to look at what seems to be cropping up more and more in weddings and predicting what will be the main trends in the wedding world over the following year.

So grab a hot cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate (delete as appropriate) as it’s time for our annual look ahead. From big sleeves, statement florals, crisp walls(!) and the impact of the current world financial meltdown on wedding decisions, here’s our round up of the wedding trends we’ll be seeing a lot more of in 2023.

Do you agree with our trend predictions? Have you noticed any other trends about to explode in 2023? And are you featuring anything we’ve mentioned in your own wedding? Let us know in the comments below!

After the Wedding comes the Admin

Everything you need to take care of from the moment the wedding is over & beyond! Your Post-Wedding Admin…or as we like to call it ‘Wedmin’, Checklist!

***

First comes love, then comes marriage…then comes the admin!

There’s been a lot of planning, a spreadsheet with more tabs and colour coding than even made sense by the end, meetings and appointments, to-do lists that somehow continue to get added to faster than removed, despite being desperately close to W-Day (*Wedding Day in case you were wondering), but your big day is finally within sight (or maybe has recently passed if you’re reading this).  Congrats!

Maybe, after all of that, you’re wondering what more we could possibly be here to tell you about?  Well, it’s the fun stuff we have fondly termed ‘post-wedmin’… ‘cos making something sound cute definitely makes it more exciting, right?  Ok, well if nothing else, we’re hoping it makes it sound more approachable!  It’s all those final administrative jobs that need taking care of before you can finally move away from your laptop/phone/bank account to put your feet up and say, “ok, we’re married, what do you wanna watch on Netflix?”

But honestly, we’re not here to stress you out with more jobs!  More of a checklist that you can work through to be confident there’s nothing you’ve forgotten or overlooked that could come back to bite you later.

So, if you’re in the final weeks of wedding planning or very recently married, this is the video for you, or simply mark it ‘watch later’ so we’re there when you’re ready for us…then Netflix!

Any big jobs we’ve missed?  Add them in the comments below to help out other viewers, especially if you’re not getting married in the UK as maybe there’s some specific to your country.

Now the wedmin is taken care of, how about a little honeymoon inspiration? Find our honeymoon destination reviews on our YouTube playlist here:

Wedding Cake Alternatives

If cake isn’t your jam then you may just be wondering if you *have* to have a wedding cake as part of your celebrations. It’s tradition right? Well, while we’re not fully on board with the anti-cake feeling (big cake lovers here at Bride Society), we are very pro doing things your way and having a wedding that’s personal and meaningful to you. So if you don’t like cake, don’t have cake! And who even needs cake when there are soooooo many other options for a showstopper centrepiece.

We’re sharing our ideas, from savoury to sweet, for alternatives to a traditional wedding cake. (But, if like us, you’d still like cake and are looking for other ideas to add to your wedding food offering, this video still works for you.)

And, we should probably warn you; after watching this video you might end up increasing the size of your dessert table. How else will you fit multiple ideas on there… The more the merrier we say!

And if you think we’ve missed a corker of an idea, please let us know in the comments below to share with other couples deciding what to do for their wedding.

What have you chosen for your big day? Are you opting for cake, or choosing something a bit different? Or having it all?! We’d love to hear your plans.

Modernising Wedding Traditions

How to Update Wedding Traditions for your Big Day

***

Culturally we love a tradition here in the UK.  And who can blame us?  You hear Michael Bublé come on the car radio or see an ad for Love Actually and it’s an instant cue for your brain that Christmas must be coming!

Traditions serve a great purpose for helping us recognise what an event is, i.e. What makes something recognisable as a birthday party vs a Christmas party vs a wedding etc?  After all, what is Christmas without Pigs in Blankets (ok, very British reference, but seriously the best thing ever)?

All that said, above all else we want to help you make your wedding feel like YOU, for you to be comfortable.  Your wedding should be a reflection of who you both are and nothing else.

If a tradition doesn’t do it for you, no problem, throw it away!  Don’t want a big white dress?  Fine!  You really don’t have to!

If you don’t like what a tradition historically stands for / represents, why not mix it up or redefine it, make up your own thing or throw it out altogether?  Basically, you do you! There’s a big difference between what you HAVE to have to make the wedding legally binding and what you traditionally ‘have’ to have / do.  Feel liberated!

The way we see it, you’ve got 3 choices:

  1. Love tradition?  Great, stick with it!  All power to you.
  2. Keep the rough idea of the tradition but mix it up, redefine it and make it you.
  3. Throw it out!  Keep what you like (if anything) and chuck the rest.  So long Sista!

So then, how to make a wedding still ‘feel’ like a wedding whilst making it also ‘you’?  Well, in today’s YouTube video we’re chatting about some of the biggest traditions in British weddings, giving you lots of suggestions on how to give them a face lift whilst still giving them a nod – big or small!

If you’ve got any other ideas on how couples can mix up wedding traditions, drop a comment over on the YouTube video to help each other out.

Autumnal Cupcake Inspiration

Bake and decorate some autumn themed cupcakes with us

***

The night’s are well and truly drawing in, the trees are turning golden, it’s time to rewatch Gilmore Girls for the 6457th time and Bake Off is back on our screens!. Autumn is here! And it’s not all about Halloween or pumpkin puns (although we are a big fan of a gourd pun…).

We’ve created three simple cupcake looks which will be perfect for an autumn wedding cupcake tower, or even for an average Monday afternoon treat. Create our gilded pine cone, pumpkin patch and abstract autumn cupcakes with us.

Ready, steady, bake!

To bake 6 vanilla cupcakes (scale the recipe as needed):

  • 115g butter/margarine
  • 115g caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1tsp vanilla extract
  • 115g self raising flour

Vanilla buttercream:

  • 250g butter
  • 575g icing sugar
  • 1tsp vanilla extract

We used the equivalent of 1M/2D piping tip for the rosettes and open star piping tips in different sizes for the pumpkins and abstract cupcakes.

The mould used in the video is no longer available, but here is a similar style. Or search for ‘pine cone icing mould’ in a search engine.

If you have a go at creating your own seasonal cupcakes, we’d love to see! Tag us in your photos over on Instagram.

Bride to Be “Must Haves”

Absolutely Non-Essential, Essential Items for the Bride to Be

***

We’ve been creating wedding content for over five years now and it’s about time we got down to serious business and talked about the absolute essentials when it comes to planning a wedding.

No, we’re not talking budget or wedding venue, or even how to legally get married. We’re talking those Bride to BeMust Haves“, the items that announce to the world you’re a bride and everyone should know it!
Of course these are absolutely not essential when it comes to wedding planning, but if you are looking for some inspiration about how to really immerse yourself fully in the wedding planning world, you might like some of our ‘must have’ suggestions.

We’re covering all bases, from the subtle to the not so subtle. From clothing to jewellery to accessories. If you can think of it, you can probably find it personalised for the future bride.

Enjoy!

N.B. Please know this video is most definitely a bit of fun and all talk of ‘essentials’ and ‘must haves’ shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

Everything featured, plus even more, can be found over on our dedicated Pinterest page.

Items featured in the video (*Please note: products marked with an asterisk are affiliate links. This means we receive a nominal amount of commission from the seller for the referral at no extra cost to you.)

Are you tempted by any of the ideas featured in the video? We’d love to know what your ‘must haves’ are. Let us know in the comments or come on over to Instagram!
