Not so Spooky Pumpkins

We’ve got the love for Autumn (aka ‘Fall’ for our friends overseas) right now, with all the rich colours and crisp falling leaves it brings.  If you’re having your wedding in this beautiful season, then we’ve got a series of tutorials coming up that you’re sure to be inspired by.  So quick… Hit Subscribe over on our YouTube channel so you don’t miss a thing!

With Halloween coming up this week, we thought we’d bring you our favourite pumpkin ideas to kick off this wedding season, though we’re going more glam, less spooky!  Give these gorgeous floral pumpkin centrepieces a try for your reception tables (or even just your home if you’re super keen!).  Either use the pumpkins in all their natural orangy glory, or grab your paint brush and transform them into the colour of your choice, going classic white as we have or whatever ties in with your theme.  Tip: Remember to leave time for them to dry thoroughly and you’ll likely need to give them two coats.  PLUS keep those brush strokes all in the same direction to keep it looking professional!

Once that’s taken care of, watch how to transform the simple pumpkin into something wedding-worthy…

…if you fancy doubling up your creation as your table names/numbers then simply add your text, and there you have it, your own masterpiece!

Cookies! Biscuits! Cookies! Biscuits!

Whichever side of the pond you’re from, whatever you call them, I think we can all agree we’re pretty happy to eat them!  There’s nothing better than an edible tutorial video in our opinion, for obvious reasons…and of course we’d recommend you make a practice batch, you know, just in case!

There are many places for the humble cookie/biscuit in a wedding (if you try really hard, and we think you should), such as favours for children (and adults too!), name places or even a ‘cookie table‘ – a genius idea I sampled at the most recent wedding reception I attended in the USA with all the imaginable cookies, it was pretty awesome.

Ok, ok, so you probably shouldn’t go overkill, so for now, here’s just one idea for how to feature these yummy things we call biscuits/cookies/biscuits/cookies into your celebrations…HEN PARTY COOKIES!!!!

A fab idea as an activity at your Hen, or even just as a parting gift.  Simply grab some hen shaped cookie-cutters and cluck this way…

Whilst we’ve walked you through the basics of baking & decorating these treats, we recommend getting experimental too, perhaps adding some flavouring such as Vanilla Essence, or if you’re having more of a Winter theme, then a pinch of cinnamon & nutmeg.

Enjoy!

Is there anything prettier?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, around here at Bride Society we love the pretty stuff that is confetti!  Ok, not so much the boxed stuff you buy from high street card shops that is basically tissue paper…please NO! Step away! I’m sure we’ve all been guilty of buying it for someone’s wedding at some point in the distant past, but no more!  Plus trends have definitely made a shift from guests bringing their own confetti to it being provided by the couple. Not only does this handily overcome any unfortunate circumstances where guests forget to bring any, but also allows you to select your own look for your photographs, both in terms of type and colour.  With an added bonus that this tends to make venues happier as it is easier to control the biodegradable nature of the product (please check with your venue on their rules regarding confetti before getting too excited about our DIY video!).

We love both fresh petals and dried petals as confetti options.  Feeling the squeeze around your purse as you’re reading this? Don’t panic!  This doesn’t have to be as costly as it sounds…if you’ve still got plenty of time before W-Day, try saving the petals from any bunches of flowers you exchange with your fiancé(e) in the run up and dry them out – instant added romance!  Alternatively, turn to your own garden, or even rope in parents and bridesmaids, this is the type of low risk wedding task people love to get involved with.  We know, we know, “genius” we hear you say!

So, now we’ve got the confetti sorted, let’s check out this rustic-feel, yet trendy, DIY idea on how to present it, we’re thinking envelopes, and we’re thinking decorative tape…come this way…

Shake your Pompoms!

…We’ve been holding on to that one for weeks!

One of our most versatile DIY videos to date; tissue paper pompoms.  SO many possibilities!  We’re excited, can you tell? Large, medium, small or a combo of them all, it’s Goldilocks paradise!  So easy to make, minimal equipment and certainly nothing ‘specialist’ required.

This is a really lovely way of decorating a space quickly and cost-effectively that looks super pretty.  They can be used for Weddings (obviously!), Hen Parties, Birthday’s, Baby Showers…you get the idea!  Just pick your colour of tissue paper to suit your theme and event.  And what’s great, if you have the storage space, is you can always hang on to them for the next occasion!  See, versatile!

Scissors at the ready….

Champagne? Go on then!

We’re big fans of making things personal here at Bride Society. Those touches are what people notice, and lets them see ‘you’ in your wedding.  So today we’re demoing how to personalise champagne flutes. If you’ve not got the budget to buy something super fancy or you quite simply just want to do it yourself, then pop down to your local supermarket and pick up some plain champagne flutes.  Minimal equipment necessary, just make sure you’re using ink suitable for glassware.

You can create designs for all different purposes; maybe you want to pop the question to your bridesmaids, thank your Ushers, or you could even write ‘Mr X’ and ‘Mrs X’ ready for your first toast as Husband and Wife. The possibilities are endless, well, depending how much you want to say and how small you can write!!  So let us get you started…

Dresses, Dresses, Dresses…more specifically, ASOS Bridesmaid Dresses!

You’re planning your wedding, your budget is rapidly decreasing, you’ve picked your bridesmaids but now they need to look the part!  What to do?  On the very presumptuous assumption on our part that you’re not having a nudist wedding (but all power to you if you are!), then shopping is the name of the game.

If those pennies are slipping away a little too rapidly, or maybe you’re even toying with the challenge of having to let one of your ‘maids go to keep you in the black, then hold up!  Look no further, take a breath, put down the brown paper bag…these days there are many more options than the default Bridal Shop dresses, and price tags, as beautiful as they may be.

Bride Society took a turn about the high street to see what alternatives lie out there in the wild, and found ASOS.  An online store with a wide variety of dresses to suit almost any shape, size and taste.  Even better they offer some dresses in multiple designs and lengths if you are going for a more ‘mix and match’ type look, and trying to keep everybody happy!

In this week’s video we try out, and tell you exactly what we think of 5 different ASOS-brand ‘bridesmaid’ dresses to help you in your quest…we told you it would all be ok…

ATTENTION: This post is cake related!

It’s true! Around here at Bride Society, we get pretty excited about all things cake, and this week we’re checking out cake toppers.

Times have changed and trends have moved on from the once traditional porcelain bride and groom on top of our wedding cakes. There are now a huge variety of personal and imaginative toppers out there, something to suit every couple.  Not to mention the fact that this means you can spend a little more time thinking about cake, always a win!

We think this is a great opportunity to put a bit of ‘you’ in to the day – nobody wants to be at a cookie cutter wedding (my personal number 1 bug-bear, shhh), they want to know they are at your wedding.  This can be totally inexpensive and will make that ‘cutting of the cake’ photo extra special.

We’re taking a look at a bunch of different styles in this video, so take 5, grab a cuppa (or a glass of wine, we won’t judge!) and join Bride Society for spot of inspiration and then head on over to our Pinterest board to see our top picks!

She Wore Flowers in Her Hair

Thinking about what to use in your hair, or what the Bridesmaids should have in their hair on your wedding day can be a tough decision. Do you opt for something sparkly? Or if that doesn’t fit in with the theme of the Big Day, then what about flowers? Then the dilemma is do you use fresh, dried or faux!

We’ve created a really easy tutorial showing you how to make a dried flower hair pin, but this would work just as easily with faux flowers.

Pick your favourite flowers or ones to match your colour scheme and use a single flower like we have, or perhaps use a cluster to personalise your look.

All About That Gift

When we got married to our respective partners, the four of us all experienced the same dilemma…we didn’t want to ask our guests for gifts/money, in part, because we were already asking people to travel and incur all the costs associated with that, but tradition, and often expectation, creates an assumption there will be one.  There are pros and cons of course to either decision, however for us, it boils down to this; guests usually want to get you something, even if it’s something small as a gesture, they want it to be something you’d want, you’d like and you’ve not already got.  SO HELP THEM OUT!  You don’t have to advertise in your invitations that you have a gift list, and that’s often when guests feel obliged.  Maybe you just tell the people that specifically ask you about it – if they’re asking, they want to know! Or maybe pop it on your Wedding Website or even just tell key people like your parents so that if relatives are asking them for ideas then they’ve got somewhere to direct them.

Top tip: Include a range of pricing so people can pick at the level they are comfortable at and this demonstrates that you have no expectation of them to spend big, they know they can get you something you actually want that isn’t going to sting their credit cards. Everybody wins.  Not to mention this avoids duplication, as much as you’re grateful for the thought and appreciative, there’s only so many heart-shaped photo frames any one home can realistically handle!

And don’t forget, gift lists today don’t have to mean registering with John Lewis or Debenhams if that doesn’t float your boat (although it’s still a pretty good boat to get on!).  There’s everything from charity donations to virtual honeymoon lists out there.  Have a listen to our video for some inspiration.

We hope this helps!

Did someone say Prosecco?

What says celebration better than popping a cork on something bubbly?  This week we’ve been on the Prosecco (we’re over 18, it’s ok!) putting together this cute but sophisticated party favour idea for you.  Take a look at our YouTube video to see how to turn our bubbly friends into clever favours for your hen party or wedding guests.  They could even be used as ‘welcome’ drinks and made into part of your venue decor.  We used minature bottles of Prosecco, but there are lots of drink options available in this size in supermarkets, why not pick your favourite to make it more personal?

Don’t forget the non-drinkers that may be coming and find a classy, non-alcoholic alternative like these drinks we found at Hotel Chocolat.

Simple but effective.

Confetti madness!

DIY Confetti Cones

So, confetti…it’s pretty, it’s fun, you probably want it.  Now we’ve established you want the pretty stuff thrown in your direction, this begs the question, “how”?  I’m guessing not from a canon, though now I think about it that could be pretty awesome (as long as you’re not standing too close!).  This is assuming your venue allows confetti – some don’t, so do check! Also some require you to ensure the confetti you use is bio-degradable; remember, this day might be all about you and your fiance, but we don’t want the environment to have a bad day do we.

There are many creative ways that you can do this part of your day, of course you can stick with the tried and tested ‘grab a handful’ approach, cheap and gets the job done, or even more traditional approach of just assuming people will bring their own.  However, if you don’t want to run the risk of only two people remembering to bring any with them, or want to avoid deviant guests that go old-school by throwing rice at you (close your eyes! Ouch!), or even if you’re just particular about your colours, then a hands-on approach may be for you.

Today we’re showing you how to make these cool confetti cones out of old books – an up-cycle win for the environment, look at you go!  So pop down to your local charity shop or car boot to get yourself a romance novel.

WARNING: Optional whether you choose to read the novel first, however this DIY will take significantly longer if you do!

Otherwise let’s get crafting…

We’ll be back with you in a few weeks time to show you how to make a base for the cones to sit in, so hit Subscribe on our YouTube page so you don’t miss it.

Ice it up!

So, wait for it….THE SUN IS OUT!  We know, it’s shocking news. We can’t quite believe it ourselves, but in an attempt to welcome the summer sun here is our DIY Edible Flower Ice Cubes video.

Never miss an opportunity to jazz up those summer drinks, be it at your wedding reception, hen party, baby shower or family BBQ.  Simple and quick but super pretty. Check out how we did it in this week’s YouTube video.

For our ice cubes we used Violas and Cornflowers (aka Centaurea Cyanus) – be careful to make sure you are using edible flowers and only the edible parts of the plant, you want your party to be remembered for all the right reasons!

NB. Apologies if we jinxed it and the sun promptly disappears (– Bride Society assumes no responsibility!)

We try out High Street Wedding Dresses…

In today’s video we check out High Street Bridal, starting with Dorothy Perkins.  Does the thought of spending a large sum of money on a dress you’ll only wear once make you a little weak at the knees, give you palpitations or likely to cause your bank manager to give you a withering look?  Then the lower price point of these Dorothy Perkins dresses may be something you should get excited about.

We tried out six of their eight styles for 2017 (purely because the other two were not available in our size at the time, not because we outright rejected them!).  Take a look to see what we thought.

These dresses can be found and purchased on the Dorothy Perkins website. Plus they have photos with actual models!

Getting Crafty! Wedding Decor Ideas: DIY Floral Lettering

Welcome to our first DIY decor video!  Here you see how to make lettering exciting for your Big Day (or special occasion!).  In this video we used Sweet William flowers, which can be easily sourced at Supermarkets and Florists.

We chose to demonstrate using an ampersand, you could place this between you & your spouse on the ‘top table’ or ‘sweetheart table’ for example. Alternatively you could spell out your married name, Mr & Mrs or your first initials.

We found that these cut flowers lasted a good couple/few days once assembled – so no need to be manically running around the day before your wedding with a glue gun!!
